How Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay differ
Travellers sometimes book a 'Ha Long tour' and are surprised by a Cat Ba departure, or the reverse. The adjoining bays share a similar landscape, but transport connections, documents and rates differ.

What they have in common
Ha Long and Lan Ha share a limestone landscape of steep islands, water caves and small sheltered beaches. Both offer these views; the best choice depends on the experience and itinerary you prefer.
How they differ
- DIFFERENT ADMINISTRATIONS. Ha Long Bay is in Quang Ninh; Lan Ha Bay is in the Cat Ba area of Hai Phong.
- DIFFERENT DEPARTURE POINTS. Ha Long itineraries depart from Quang Ninh terminals, while Lan Ha itineraries use Cat Ba departure points. Road connections therefore differ.
- DIFFERENT BOAT TRAFFIC. Ha Long has more boats, including luxury vessels. Lan Ha has quieter mooring areas, with fewer luxury choices.
- DIFFERENT BOATS. Ha Long offers more large vessels, which may suit travellers concerned about motion. Lan Ha has more small and medium-sized boats.
The bays also fall under different local administrations. Route permissions, vessel rules and weather-related sailing restrictions may be issued independently, so it matters which itinerary you book.
A closure in one bay does not guarantee the other is operating
Operations in Quang Ninh and Lan Ha can be suspended independently. Hearing that boats run in one bay does not confirm your route in the other. We check with the operator of your actual itinerary and notify you if it cannot run.
Which should you choose?
- For a first visit focused on famous caves and many boat choices, consider Ha Long.
- For quieter anchorages, kayaking and small beaches, consider Lan Ha.
- For travellers prone to motion sickness, discuss larger boats, often found on Ha Long routes.
- For three days or longer, consider one bay night and one Cat Ba island night. This combines experiences and leaves more room to adapt to weather.
